Soaring Beyond Fear: How to Build Confidence in Aerial Dance and Yoga
Aerial dance and yoga can be as intimidating as they are mesmerizing. Watching practitioners gracefully defy gravity can leave you wondering, Could I ever do that? The short answer: Yes, you can. Many people experience fear, doubt, or hesitation when first stepping into an aerial class. However, with the right mindset and strategies, you can overcome those fears and build unshakable confidence that you can carry with you into your everyday life.
This post will explore the fears commonly associated with aerial dance and yoga, offer practical ways to overcome them, and highlight how these practices can help you grow mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Understanding Fear in Aerial Practice
Fear is a natural response to stepping outside of your comfort zone, especially in activities that involve heights, balance, or strength. In aerial dance and yoga, fear typically stems from a few common concerns:
1. Fear of Falling: The idea of being suspended in midair can trigger anxiety about losing control or getting injured.
2. Fear of Failure: Many worry about not being strong or skilled enough to perform the moves.
3. Fear of Judgment: Some may feel self-conscious about how they might look or perform in front of others.
4. Fear of the Unknown: Trying something entirely new, like aerial practice, can feel overwhelming and even scary.
Recognizing these fears is the first step to conquering them. Aerial practice is not about perfection—it’s about growth, exploration, and discovering your inner strength.
How to Overcome Fear in Aerial Dance and Yoga
1. Start Small and Set Realistic Expectations
Aerial practice isn’t about mastering advanced moves on day one. Give yourself permission to start with the basics. Most beginners begin with simple poses like seated positions, gentle swings, or low-to-the-ground stretches using the hammock.
Setting realistic goals, such as holding a pose for a few seconds or improving your grip strength, can help you celebrate small wins and build momentum.
2. Choose the Right Class and Instructor
Finding a beginner-friendly class with a certified instructor is key. A good instructor will create a supportive environment, teach proper techniques, and offer modifications to match your skill level. At YDC, we offer a variety of classes with a wide range of skill levels, no matter your age, so we can meet you where you’re at.
Before your first class, don’t hesitate to ask questions about what to expect. Knowing the structure of the class and how the equipment works can help ease your mind.
3. Trust the Equipment
One of the most common fears in aerial practice is the fear that the hammock or silk might fail. It’s important to remember that aerial equipment is designed to hold several times your body weight and is rigorously tested for safety.
Instructors also perform regular checks to ensure the rigging is secure. Trusting the equipment is a vital step toward focusing on your practice rather than worrying about what might go wrong.
4. Focus on Breathing and Mindfulness
Fear often causes us to tense up and hold our breath, which can make aerial poses feel even more challenging. Incorporating deep breathing and mindfulness into your practice will help you stay present, focused, and engaged.
Before attempting a pose, take a few deep breaths to center yourself. Remind yourself that it’s okay to feel nervous and that every effort you make is progress.
5. Build Strength Gradually
Many beginners worry they’re not strong enough for aerial dance or yoga. The truth is, you don’t need to be! Consistent aerial practice naturally builds strength over time.
To support your progress, consider incorporating strength-training exercises, such as planks, pull-ups, or core work, into your routine. Strengthening and stretching your body outside of class will make you feel more confident, flexible, and capable during practice.
6. Practice Self-Compassion
It’s easy to compare yourself to others in the class, especially those with more experience. Instead of focusing on what others are doing, try shifting your attention to your own progress. Everyone is on their own journey with Aerial Dance!
Celebrate small victories, whether it’s holding a pose longer than before or simply showing up for class. Remember, everyone was a beginner once.
7. Embrace Fear as Part of Growth
Fear is a natural part of learning something new, and it’s often a sign that you’re pushing your boundaries. Instead of resisting fear, try to reframe it as an opportunity for growth. Leaning into that fear can help you take new opportunities, and you might even find out you are stronger than you think.
Every time you confront a fear—whether it’s attempting a new pose or trusting the hammock—you’re strengthening your resilience and building confidence.
Tips to Build Confidence in Aerial Practice
1. Take It One Step at a Time
Confidence doesn’t appear overnight—it’s built gradually. Start with simple moves and work your way up. Each small achievement will boost your self-assurance and prepare you for more challenging poses.
2. Practice Consistently
The more time you spend in the hammock, the more comfortable and confident you’ll become. Even short, regular practice sessions can make a big difference over time.
3. Visualize Success
Visualization is a powerful tool. Before attempting a new pose, take a moment to imagine yourself performing it successfully. Picture yourself feeling strong, balanced, and in control.
Visualization can help reduce anxiety and shift your mindset for success.
4. Seek Support and Encouragement
Many aerial studios foster a welcoming and supportive community. Connecting with fellow students and sharing in your experiences can be so gratifying. Encouragement from others can be incredibly motivating and help you feel less alone in your journey.
5. Celebrate Progress
Confidence grows when you acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small. Keep a journal to track your progress or take photos of your poses to see how far you’ve come.
How Aerial Dance and Yoga Build Confidence Over Time
1. Strengthening the Mind-Body Connection
Aerial practice requires focus, balance, and body awareness. As you learn to trust your body’s abilities, you’ll feel more connected and confident in your movements.
2. Facing Fears and Building Resilience
Every time you step into an aerial class, you’re confronting fears and stepping out of your comfort zone. This act of bravery builds mental resilience, which can carry over into other aspects of life.
3. Achieving “Impossible” Goals
Many poses that initially feel impossible become achievable with time and practice. Achieving these milestones fosters a sense of accomplishment and proves that you’re capable of more than you thought.
4. Experiencing Joy and Playfulness
The playful nature of aerial dance and yoga reminds you not to take yourself too seriously. Swinging, flipping, and flying through the air can reignite a sense of childlike wonder and joy.
Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them
1. Feeling Intimidated by Advanced Practitioners
Solution: Remember, every expert was once a beginner. Focus on your own progress and avoid comparing yourself to others.
2. Struggling with Strength or Flexibility
Solution: Be patient with your body and trust the process. Strength and flexibility develop naturally over time with consistent practice.
3. Fear of Falling
Solution: Practice grounding poses first to build trust in the hammock. Gradually work up to poses that take you higher off the ground.
Final Thoughts
Overcoming fear and building confidence in aerial dance and yoga is a journey of self-discovery and growth. By starting small, practicing consistently, and celebrating your progress, you’ll find yourself achieving things you once thought were impossible.
Remember, fear is not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign that you’re challenging yourself and growing. Embrace the process, trust your abilities, and enjoy the incredible feeling of freedom that aerial practice offers.
So, are you ready to take flight? The journey may feel daunting at first, but the rewards are well worth it. Step into the hammock, breathe deeply, and let your confidence soar.
Kids Corner:
“I teach mostly children. I mostly center on teaching little kids, showing them how to love themselves, how to love people around them and how to use yoga to better themselves. I show them how to get their body a little bit stronger and make them feel better. One of the main things we do focus on with the kids especially is confidence building.
We always like to show them that they shou’dnt be afraid to do things that may be a little bit out of their comfort zone, to really love the things that they do. We encourage them to always get up in front of people to perform, to be confident in their performance to show everyone and to tell themselves ‘hey, I can really do this’ and its super fun.
We think its really important to give them that outlet to be proud of themselves to love themselves and be confident in themselves and take that into their everyday lives, into schooling, into their relationships or wherever they may go in life.”
